Periodontal (gum) Treatment

Even if no cavities are present, severe cases of periodontal disease can require tooth extraction.

‘Gingivitis’ is inflammation of the gums caused by plaque. When the inflammation spreads to the alveolar bone and ligament, it becomes ‘periodontitis,’ or gum disease. If left untreated, the structures holding the tooth will weaken and extraction may be necessary.

Periodontal disease affects over 70% of adults, but it can easily be treated and prevented.

STEP 01

Healthy Teeth

Gums are pink in color and surround the teeth tightly without inflammation.

Scaling, Regular Checkups

STEP 02

Gingivitis

Inflammation causes redness and swelling. Gums may bleed when brushing.

Scaling, Gum Planing

STEP 03

Periodontitis

Inflammation spreads, causing receded gums and pain when chewing.

Root planing, Curettage

STEP 04

Severe Case

The root becomes exposed, causing severe pain and possibly loosening the tooth.

Debridement

Strong gums are vital

Lienjang Dental Clinic provides consistent and effective treatment for periodontal disease.

STEP 01

Scaling

The basic step of periodontal treatment where tartar is removed from the teeth.

STEP 02

Root Planing

Roots that have become roughened by bacteria are smoothed to prevent reattachment of tartar.

STEP 03

Open Root Planing

Diseased tissue is removed from deep inside the gums to promote the reattachment of healthy tissue.

STEP 04

For severe cases of periodontal disease, the inflamed gums and tissue are surgically removed.
